André Vandenbussche's Biography

André Vandenbussche was born in 1951 in Roncq, France where he spent all his childhood. After his studies at the French Lyceum Gambetta in Tourcoing, he attended the Fine Arts School of Tourcoing from 1969 to 1972. He married Geneviève Rogez and has three children: Céline, Vincent and Pierre-Yves.

Since the 1970's, he embarked into painting with ink and watercolour. Then, he explored new graphic and pictural fields using acrylics and color inks. During the early 1990's, he reached a style mixing natural ocres and acrylic.

From 1969 to 1980: From academic style to the edge of abstraction

After 1970, André Vandenbussche participated in many exhibitions presenting ink and watercolour pieces. The rigorous graphism, the cold and sensitive effect is particularly impressive. The artist applied academic technics in his paintings representing mainly landscapes. His trips to the Black Forest Forêt-Noire inspired him and it transpired into the work of this period.

Progressively, his clearly representative vision of his environment changed into something which was not only a vision but more broadly a 'perception' of the world. In other terms, it is not just the view involved but, as well, other senses as tactile or audio sensations and recreations. In fact, in order to suggest an ambiance, an atmosphere, it is not enough to transcribe a photographic reality. He started with watercolours to explore new domains of creation. His watercolours became quickly a succession of colored spots which reinforced the perception of the scene's atmosphere suggesting sometimes the cold and salty sea breeze and sometimes the sweet perfume of summer trees.

From 1980 to 1996 : Technical Exploration

Following the same process, André Vandenbussche followed his exploration using new technics to serve his creative vision. His approach allowed him to obtain the [Paul Ricard Fondation Award during three consecutive years.

The artist chose purposedly to push his work to the edge of abstraction without crossing the line. He played extensively with the light in his paintings, pushing the colour to the ultimate limit of saturation; dismanteling perspectives (In that aspect, he was clearly influenced by greek icons which he discovered during his trips to The Cyclads et to Crete).

He also experimented acrylic mixed with ink that openned him towards a new approach in his paintings.

From 1997 to today : Ocres and acrylic...

During this period, André Vandenbussche visited the Lubéron Region and discovered the Rustrel Ocres quarry also known as "colorado provençal".

The artist discovered a new approach to art through the ocres. The manipulation of these raw material is applied directly with the hand, which allows the painter to express all the wanted tonalities without constraints. His research with ocres was also illustrated by some brush work preserved by a fixative material, real signature of his creations.

Following his new artistics fields' quest capable to express his creativity, he seldom returned to a minimalist work using the three primary colors with mosaic paterns inspired by different elements from his region and his familiar surroundings as elements of Flamish pubs, carnival dress-ups, farms, trees, and other elements inspired by his trips: women faces (Mali)...

The size and format of his canvases are growing, the depth of natural colors requiring larger exhibition surface.
